Some women are obsessed with handbags and have one in every color, shape and style, changing them daily to match their outfits and their moods. Other women prefer just to have a few good handbags that they can wear again and again. No matter which extreme describes you, or whether you fall somewhere in the middle, there are some general things you should know about how to buy a handbag and make it work for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Familiarize yourself with the latest handbag styles and shapes. There are also a range of sizes, textures and handles available, and it helps to know what your choices are up front so you can narrow in on your favorite looks.
Step2
Determine what you will keep in your handbag. For instance, if you carry a lot of items in your bag, a larger tote or a hobo might come in handy. Or, if you keep only a small wallet, cell phone and lipstick in your bag, you might want one of the more structured small bags.
Step3
Decide how much you want to spend and also if this bag will be for every day use or relegated to go with certain outfits or for special occasions.
Step4
Shop at department stores, specialty store and off-price stores to find a large variety of bags from which you can make your selection.
Step5
Also look online for handbags, but remember to check the return policy in case the bag doesn’t meet your needs when it arrives in the mail.
Step6
When shopping in stores, bring the basics such as your wallet, cell phone, makeup bag and keys and try sticking them inside a few handbags you like to see how they fit.
Step7
Remember that bags come in a variety of finishes, include leather, vinyl, fabrics, suede and others. Try different ones and see what you like.
Step8
Look for handbags in colors that will work with the rest of your wardrobe. Black or brown is always safe. If you want to spice up a neutral bag, look for contrast stitching, outside or flap pockets and bold hardware. Also embrace textures such as alligator skin or herringbone fabric for a rich look.
Step9
Consider statement bags that come in bright shades such as turquoise, yellow or green and will stand out against a more basic wardrobe.
Step10
Try on the bags you like in a three-way mirror to see how they sit against your body.

Tips & Warnings

  • Understand that the price range of handbags varies greatly. You can spend anywhere from $30 to $3,000 or even much, much more on a handbag. It all depends on what you want and how much you are willing to invest in this purchase.
  • Have fun! While it may be hard to find clothing that fits you just right, a handbag is usually a one-size fits all and can be fun to buy!
  • Keep in mind that you will be carrying this bag often, so make sure that the compartments are easy to access and that the bag isn’t too heavy to use regularly.
