If your child's tantrums have you upset and overwhelmed, here are some tips to help you deal with them, and in some cases stop them altogether.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  1. Step 1

Do not give in to your child's demands. If you give your child what they want then they will think that throwing a tantrum will ALWAYS get them what they want.

  2. Step 2

Talk softly to your child. Tell that when they can calm down and talk to you in a normal tone you might be able to help them. Sometimes approaching the situation like this and the calming sound of your voice might actually calm your child down.

  3. Step 3

If your child refuses to communicate and will not stop throwing the tantrum you need to walk away and tell your child in a calm voice that you cannot help them until they calm down.

  4. Step 4

You can designate a particular time out period for when your child acts out. Pick one spot or chair in your house away from all of the televisions and toys and place your child there for when they are out of control. It can be hard but be relentless in keeping your child in their "time out spot." Over time it will get easier.

on 3/5/2009 Great article. No matter how little once they start tantrums, they get on your nerves.

on 11/6/2008 Solid advice. It's best to nip those tantrums in the bud. When I see young children (and some older ones!) having full-on whining tantrums in public for minutes on end until they get what they want, I have to wonder who's in charge, 'cause something ain't right.
