How to Write a Cover Letter for your Resume

A good cover letter might not necessarily get you the job you want by itself, but it can torpedo your chances of employment if it's subpar. Your cover letter is a complement to your resume; the two documents should combine to explain all of the reasons why a company should hire you. A cover letter can fill in the gaps in your resume as well as further explain your qualifications and accomplishments, making its inclusion essential when applying for any job.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the description of the job for which you are applying. Highlight the parts where you're strong and that you'll want to accentuate in your cover letter. Review your resume and make sure it's directly applicable to the job description.

    • 2

Open your cover letter with a formal salutation. Use the recruiter's name if you know it, but if not, a generic opening is fine.

    • 3

Write an opening paragraph that briefly states the job you're applying for, how you heard about the opening and why you feel you're a good fit for the position. Mention any mutual contacts that can help to bolster your case.

    • 4

Compose a body paragraph that shows the company what you can do for them. Use your work history as a point of reference for your argument. Refer to the job posting so that you can show you're fully qualified for the position.

    • 5

Close your cover letter with an indication of what your next step will be. If you have the contact information for the recruiter, state a time at which you will follow up. If not, end your letter by saying you look forward to hearing from the company.

    • 6

Highlight the text of your cover letter in your word processor and select a font that looks professional and readable. Pick a font that reads well both on paper and on screen so that your letter looks good no matter where it's read.

    • 7

Print out the cover letter and read it one last time. Reading the cover letter on paper can enable you to see errors you might have otherwise overlooked. When your letter is perfect, attach it to your resume and send it off.

Tips & Warnings

  • When sending in a cover letter via email, paste the cover letter in the body of the email. This allows companies who don't accept emails with attachments to receive your letter.

  • Don't write one generic cover letter and send it out with every application. Tailor your letter to the specific requirements of the position for which you're applying.
