Decorating for the holidays can be fun and exciting, but it is important to keep your pets in mind as you deck the halls.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Keep in mind that the Christmas tree is one of the most attractive--and most dangerous--decorations for your pet.
Step2
Do not let your pet drink out of the Christmas tree stand. Some tree stands are partially covered. If not, create obstructions--you can even use gifts--to keep your pet away from the stand.
Step3
Many tree decorations will entice your dog or cat. This can lead to a) your pet ingesting a harmful substance such as paint or glass or b) your pet pulling the tree over. Keep the lower portion of your tree free of decorations.
Step4
Do not allow your pet to chew on your Christmas tree light wires. This can lead to electrocution. Keep wires tucked safely or hidden under a rug or tree skirt.
Step5
Tinsel and gift ribbons are extremely dangerous for your pet. If ingested, it can lead to stomach problems, intestinal perforation or internal bleeding. Do not keep these items in the house. If you must, store them up high.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your pet does ingest a harmful substance such as ribbon or tinsel, immediately contact your vet. Your pet will need medical attention and may even need surgery.
