How to Hassle-Proof the Holidays

Dreaming of a Norman Rockwell Christmas? You know, the one complete with perfectly wrapped presents, spotless and decorated house and beautifully bedecked Christmas tree that you cut down at a local tree farm. Tons of “to dos,” a tome-sized gift list and too many parties to pencil in on the calendar may be your reality instead. Having a hassle-free holiday season, however, is completely doable and, best of all, it’s a present to yourself.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Scale down your expectations. You don’t have to have every night of the month booked with festivities. Maybe choose one special family outing such as attending “The Nutcracker,” having breakfast with Santa at a nearby hotel or attending worship service at your church or temple. When you give yourself permission to simplify, you’re likely to savor the season all the more.
Step2
Shop till you drop--not. Make a budget and stick to it. You’ll be glad you did come January when opening your mailbox won’t be too painful. You can also trade the mall for the mouse and make quick-click purchases from the comfort of your home. You’ll avoid packed parking lots and snooze-inducing lines at the checkout but you’ll enjoy doorstep delivery and the ability to shop in your pajamas. When in doubt, consider buying gift cards so those on your list can really get what they want.
Step3
Make a charitable contribution your gift to others this year. You can easily do it online and you’ll be helping a cause that’s important to your friends and family members. Another way to show you care is to give the gift of time. For example, you can offer to baby-sit, make a meal for an elderly neighbor or go grocery shopping for a shut-in.
Step4
Throw a stress-free soiree. Parties should be enjoyable times to get together with friends and family, not stress inducers. Subtract stress from the planning by keeping the menu simple. If you don’t cook, consider hiring a caterer. The same goes for cleaning. Hire a cleaning service beforehand so you can focus on other party preparations.
Step5
Simplify card sending. Card writing can quickly become a chore if you try to do it all at once. First, consider cutting back on the number of cards you send. Next, try to spread card writing out over a few days, so the task doesn’t seem overwhelming. Lastly, consider sending eCards. There are no stamps to lick, just a mouse to click.
