How to Find an AA Service Position

The 3 pillars of AA are Unity, Recovery and Service. Having a service position in AA is an important part of sober life. Many sponsors require it, and it is a great way to get to know people if you are new. Different groups have different needs, so go to any until you find where you fit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Go to many different AA meetings and find out which groups need help.
Step2
Learn about the different positions available, what is required, and if there is a sobriety requirement. Some positions, like chairperson, require you to have a certain amount of clean time before you can take it on. Positions include chairperson, secretary, treasurer, coffeemaker, key holder and greeter.
Step3
Go to other meetings and see that even if a position doesn't exist, it doesn't mean that help isn't needed.
Step4
Once you find out what is available, volunteer yourself for the position you think you will be best for you.
Step5
Go to the group elections. If you are elected, start coming to the group early. Do the job to the best of your ability. Try to keep the position for at least 6 months to a year, depending on how the group works.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't try to control the group. The Traditions state that group leaders are trusted servants.
  • Don't be disappointed if you are voted out at the next election.
  • If you are unable to fulfill your responsibilities, don't avoid the group. Announce that you need to give up the position.
