How to Program Your TiVo Remote to Skip 30-Second Commercials

Most commercials are about 30 seconds, and although TiVo won't tell you this trick, there's a way to get your DVR to skip them. Here's how to turn your advance button into a commercial skipping button.

Things You’ll Need:

• TiVo DVR
• TiVo remote control

1. Turn on your TiVo DVR and begin watching a program.
2. On your remote, punch in the following sequence: "Select, Play, Select, 3, 0, Select."
3. If the sequence was entered correctly, your TiVo now will chime three times.
4. Test it out. Now you can use the Advance button (the button with the play arrow and the vertical line along the right side, located just under the fast forward button) to skip forward 30 seconds, about the length of the average commercial.

Tips & Warnings

• If you become skip-happy and go forward one too many times, you can go back exactly 30 seconds by pressing the "Instant Replay" button three times. That's the button located just under the rewind button on most TiVo remotes.
• The TiVo DVR sometimes might reset itself. If this happens, you will lose the 30-second skip feature. Just repeat the steps to reprogram the remote.
