Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
-
Cell phone (for habituals)
Step1
Stay in public. It’s easier to refrain from sex on a first date if you don’t go anywhere it could possibly happen. This includes each other’s bedrooms or even the restroom at the bar.
Step2
Remind yourself of one of the creepiest people you ended up sleeping with just because you listened to something other than your brain. Don’t let it happen again.
Step3
Make it a challenge. As drooling as you may be, challenge yourself to show some restraint. Use techniques such as, “I can’t have sex with this person until….” Fill in the blanks with reasons like: “We have at least five dates,” “I find out if she keeps a butcher's knife under the bed” and “I meet her dog.” If you happen to meet her dog on the first date, expand the reason to meeting her family, neighbors and second grade teacher.
Step4
Talk honestly. Even if you’re both so turned out you’re grabbing at each other under the restaurant table, you can admit your desire (although it's obvious). But also admit you’d rather wait to have sex until it’s truly meaningful for both of you.
Step5
Tell a friend to call your cell phone. If you habitually end up sleeping with someone new and regretting it, make sure a friend knows you’re on a first date and to please call sometime that evening to remind you of your past follies and help insure you don’t make a new one.
