A stamped belt makes a stylish accessory for a man or woman.

Stamping leather has served as a form of ornamentation and personalization in many cultures for centuries. With basic supplies and a plain belt you can create a stylish custom leather belt in your first leather craft session. Boy scouts, 4-H groups, leather workers at crafts fairs and artisans in various countries around the world continue to make hand-stamped leather belts. Once you master the basic process, you can use leather stamping techniques on a variety of belt and other leather projects.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Wet a rag with water and wipe the belt to make it damp. This helps to soften the leather for stamping. Make the smooth side of the leather wet enough so that it appears darker than when it was dry, but don't saturate it with water. Keeping the leather damp helps to make a clean, deep impression with the stamps, so keep the wet rag in reach as you work.

    • 2

Mark a design on the belt in pencil, if desired, or use a ruler as a guide to mark straight lines to orient your stamps. For example, make a straight line parallel with each edge of the belt, 1/4 inch from each edge to create a simple stamped border.

    • 3

Test the leather stamps on a piece of scrap leather to get used to how hard to hit the stamp to make an impression in the leather belt. Hold the stamp securely with your fingers below the top of the tool to keep them clear of the mallet. Position the design end of the tool flat against the leather with the handle at a 90-degree angle. Keep the stamp straight to ensure an even impression. Practice making even impressions, using the same amount of force each time. The harder you hit the end of the leather stamp, the deeper the impression in the leather.

    • 4

Position a stamp in the desired position, starting at the end of the belt with the holes that go through the buckle. Follow the pattern or lines to create your stamped leather design. Continue stamping the belt until you complete your design. If the impressions seem to become lighter, make the leather damp again with a wet rag.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have a workbench or other suitable work surface, use a board to protect a counter or other surface for your leathercraft project.

  • Craft and leather suppliers often sell basic leathercraft kits containing stamps and other basic tools suitable for making a stamped leather belt. A kit may be more economical than buying each tool individually.

  • Practice for as long as you want before you begin the belt project. The more confident you are in using the stamping tools, the better your results will be. Starting with a simple pattern, such as a border with two different stamps alternating, creates an attractive belt without making the project too difficult for a beginner. You can also create a row of stamps along the center of the belt and leave the edges bare.

  • Hardware stores sell suitable mallets.

  • Grip the stamp firmly and keep your fingers clear of the end of the tool when you hit it with the mallet.
