Most of the Ninth Step involves making amends. So how is it done? Keep reading to learn how to make a direct Ninth Step amend.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Grab your list of amends and pick out a name. Pray for the willingness and courage to do what's necessary.

  2. Step 2

Check your local phonebook and the internet for the person's phone number and address. You will want to call first; showing up unannounced could have a negative effect.

  3. Step 3

Call your potential amend. Explain to them that you are sober now, and are trying to straighten your life out. Ask if you can meet in person. If they agree, proceed to the next Step. If not, tell them you are sorry and would like to know if there is anything you do to right the wrong.

  4. Step 4

Arrive at the agreed upon location about 15 minutes ahead of time if meeting with them in person. Spend the time praying for your Higher Power to allow the right words to come out of your mouth. Even if the other person played a part in the situation, it is important not to condemn or criticize. Explain to the person that you are sorry and would like to know if there is anything you can do to make the situation right. It may put them at ease by telling them that you are not asking for their friendship or forgiveness. You are there to clean your side of the street.

  5. Step 5

Let them know that you appreciate them taking the time to listen when you leave. Ensure them that you will pay them back or whatever the agreed upon amend is. Leave your phone number.

  6. Step 6

Say a quick prayer of thanks when you get home. Cross the amend off your list and start taking action. Move on to the next.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have privacy when talking. They may want to meet in a public place.
  • Do your best to accommodate any reasonable request. An unreasonable amend is not something that is difficult, but something without question you cannot do.
  • Don't try too hard to contact someone. You will be amazed at how the person you need to make amends to crosses your path.
