Driving and drowsiness is a dangerous combination. Most people aren't aware that drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as drinking and driving. Fortunately, there are precautions you can take to drive without feeling drowsy. Knowing how to prevent drowsy driving is important in preventing a serious or fatal accident on the road.

Instructions

    • 1

Get enough sleep the night before. You have an increased risk of falling asleep at the wheel if you sleep less than six hours the night before driving. Don't work all day and then drive all night; a driver who has been up for more than 20 hours is at a high risk of falling asleep while driving. Travel at time when you're normally awake, and sleep when you normally sleep.

    • 2

Take a nap. Pull off the road into a parking lot or rest area, and select a well-lit place where your car is visible to other vehicles. When you wake up from your nap, leave your vehicle to stretch and exercise, and have a snack or beverage with sugar or caffeine.

    • 3

Take a break every two hours, or stop sooner if you feel drowsy. This allows you to exit your vehicle, stretch, exercise, use the restroom or get something to eat or drink. After your break, you should be more refreshed and alert for driving.

    • 4

Avoid any alcohol. Alcohol has the effect of making you sleepy; to someone who is already tired, one drink feels like four or five. Avoid drinking even one drink before driving if you haven't had enough sleep during the week; the sleepiness remains even after the alcohol wears off.

    • 5

Travel with another person. An alert passenger can help monitor your signs of fatigue. Talking with your passenger or listening to music can help you remain alert and focused on the road.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid drinking excessive amounts of caffeine before or while driving. Once the caffeine wears off, you might become very drowsy.

  • Never continue driving if you experience drowsiness -- immediately pull off the side of the road to rest in a parking lot or rest area.
