How to Fluff a Poodle

Ever wondered how the groomer gets that fabulously fluffy look on your poodle? Wish you could do it at home? Well here's how.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Slicker brush
  • High powered hair dryer or pet dryer
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Hair dryer stand
  1. Step 1

Bathe your poodle as you normally would, being sure to get all of the knots and tangles out of her coat.

  2. Step 2

Keep your poodle fairly wet after bathing since it is the drying process itself that helps to fluff up the fur.

  3. Step 3

Test your hair dryer's strength by pointing it at the fur. If it penetrates the fur all the way down to the skin, forming a circular impression, then it is powerful enough for this technique.

  4. Step 4

Holding the hair dryer still over one section of hair, notice how the hair is naturally wavy. Your objective is to straighten the hair, causing it to tease out and add volume to the fur. Do this by brushing outward from the skin in quick, brisk motions as the hair dries.

  5. Step 5

Once that first section is dried and straightened, move on to the next section of fur. Soon you'll have a clean, fluffy poodle, just the way they're supposed to be!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't have a hair dryer stand, a clamp and a coat rack, lamp or other upright object will do. You can find a clamp at any hardware store, but make sure it opens wide enough to accommodate your hair dryer.
  • If you find that your poodle's fur is drying faster than you can brush it out, just use a spray bottle to wet it again as you move on to a new section.
  • Never groom your dog with electrical devices in the bathtub. If you're concerned about hair in other parts of your home, lay down a large tablecloth or sheet in the yard or garage to complete your grooming.
