A name is the most important gift you can give your child. It's the first impression he or she will give to the world, and choosing the perfect one can be a daunting task. Here some tips to guide you through the process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research and make lists. Browse baby books, online sites, your favorite novels--whatever gives you inspiration. Jot down names that appeal to you and the reasons why.

  2. Step 2

Consider the child's last name. How do your name choices flow with the last name? Do the initials form any unsavory words? Do the first and last names match in style and flavor?

  3. Step 3

Honor a loved one. Think about a family member, friend or other loved one you may want to honor. You don't have to use the exact name--sometimes, an initial or even a similar meaning works just as well.

  4. Step 4

Pay attention to origins and meanings. A name is so much more than letters and sounds. Consider the baby's heritage or any special meaning you would like to convey with a name.

  5. Step 5

Think about the future. The name you chose must work not only on your cute, cuddly infant, but also on a teenager, a young adult and a working professional. Choose something that ages well.

  6. Step 6

Consider popularity. If you love a name, chances are someone else might, too. Decide if you're comfortable with your child being one of six Jacks in his pre-school class, or if you'd rather use something more unique.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the Social Security Administration's web site to determine which names are most popular in your area. You can search by state, year, name and popularity.
  • Take a "short list" of names with you to the hospital and chose the best one based on your newborn's looks and personality.
