Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens the bones and causes the bones to become fragile and more likely to break. It is a debilitating disease that can be prevented and treated, however if it is left untreated or steps are not taken in order to prevent it, it can progress until bones start to break. Osteoporosis is completely preventable and curable with the proper nutrition and exercise to strengthen the bones. Following are some guidelines on how to prevent development of osteoporosis.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Doctor advice and treatment
  1. Step 1

Avoid a diet which is low in calcium and certain trace minerals, combined with a reduction in the natural hydrochloric acid of the stomach as this can accelerate the osteoporosis process.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you are getting enough vitamins in your diet especially calcium, vitamins C, D, E and K. Regulate the amount of magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, boron, zinc, manganese and copper also.

  3. Step 3

Avoid drinking soft drinks as they lower calcium levels in the body by blocking calcium absorption.

  4. Step 4

Cut down on your caffeine intake as it increases the urinary excretion of calcium.

  5. Step 5

Don’t drink alcohol or smoke as this causes a negative calcium balance in the body, where more calcium is being lost than is being taken in.

  6. Step 6

Excess salt and sugar in the diet have both been linked to depletion of calcium stores so cut down on these.

  7. Step 7

Know that the goal in treatment is to preserve the remaining mass and basic structure of the bone by trying to repair and reconstruct the damaged areas. Estrogen replacement therapy and medication are prescribed by orthodox medicine, however they all come with quite severe side effects so make yourself aware of these by discussing them with your doctor.
