Driving from the east coast to the west coast by yourself can be challenging, thrilling and ultimately exhausting. By reading this article carefully, if you ever want to take part in a 3,000 mile solo journey, you'll be prepared and well on your way. It is not as simple as going to Mapquest and printing out the directions and getting the oil changed. It is a true and unique adventure. An experience like no other.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • An atlas
  • A well maintained vehicle
  • Good music
  • Money
  • Cell phone
  • Spare tire
  • Bottled water

Step1
Make sure you are in good physical shape as this journey is going to require your mind and body to be at a healthy balance. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.
Step2
Take your vehicle to a local, trustworthy mechanic and have all the fluids and other vitals checked. Don't worry if you have an old beat up car, you'll be surprised what a good solid engine can accomplish. Make sure your driver's license, registration and any other vehicle documents are current and in good standing.
Step3
Pack your vehicle efficiently and organize your space. Take advantage of the fact that you only have to pack your own items and not anyone else's. Keep the important items in the front seat with you at arm's length; maps, cell phone, money for the tolls.
Step4
Know the exact route of travel you will take. Break up the trip into six to eight hour driving periods, depending on your time frame and stamina. You can also split the periods up into miles if better suited for you. Check the weather forecast at least for the region of the country you will be traveling through on your initial day.
Step5
Buckle up and hit the road. Keep your favorite CD's handy but always listen to AM radio for traffic alerts and other newsworthy information. Know where you are going to stop the first day/night, depending on when you leave. Set goals for yourself before you stop to eat/rest/use the toilet. Be reasonable about how much longer you can drive before you need gas.
Step6
Enjoy the peace and tranquility of the open road. You will be there, in the vehicle on your own, for many hours and days. Use this time constructively to re-energize your thoughts, breathe in the fresh air and see the beautiful sights. However, always keep your concentration level on the road as your number one priority, especially when driving at night.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to book your hotels in advance of departure. Motel 6, Super 8, Holiday Inns are usually very clean and have vacancies year-round.
  • Make sure you bring along some toilet paper for absolute emergencies.
  • If you are leaving from any of the New England states and have to drive through New York City, plan to do so in the middle of the night. This will save you tremendous time and energy.
  • Don't get too frustrated at the little things. It is going to be a very long journey and issues are bound to come up. Stay focused and enjoy.
