A closed-circuit television (CCTV) is a machine which uses a camera to project an enlarged image of your reading material onto a television monitor. Needless to say, it can be a vitally important tool for a person with a significant visual impairment. Here is a set of basic instructions for how to use a CCTV to read a book.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Closed-circuit television (with a functioning light bulb)
  • Comfortable chair
  • Good book

Step1
Switch on the closed-circuit television.
Step2
Place your book, opened to the page you would like to read, on the tray.
Step3
Zoom in as far as your CCTV will allow. Move the focus knob back and forth until the enlarged letters on the screen are as sharp as possible.
Step4
Zoom back out until the text is a comfortable size for you to read without straining your eyes.
Step5
Read your book, sliding the movable tray as needed. If you prefer, you can lock the tray in place and simply slide the book itself.
Step6
When you are done reading, lock the tray in place and switch off the CCTV.

Tips & Warnings

  • A comfortable office-style chair works best, because it’s height can easily be adjusted to spare you a terrible crick in your neck.

on 6/10/2008 Thanks for the tips. I have been considered blind for the past few years and use these methods frequently. 5 stars.
