How to Print Directly to a Network Printer in Windows

Most business networks have a print server that queues all the print jobs for the network printers. However, there are times when you may prefer to print directly to the printer bypassing the print server.

These steps will walk you through setting up a TCP/IP printer port on your Windows XP computer that will allow you to print directly to the printer. Read on to learn more.

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer running Windows XP operating system and connected to a network with a network enabled printer
  • The IP address of the network enabled printer
  • Printer driver

    How to Print Directly to a Network Printer in Windows

  1. Step 1

    Click the "Start" button on your Windows XP toolbar.

  2. Step 2

    Click "Control Panel."

  3. Step 3

    Double click "Printers and Faxes."

  4. Step 4

    Click "Add A Printer" in the Printer Tasks box at the top left of the window. This will launch the Add Printer Wizard.

  5. Step 5

    Click the "Next button."

  6. Step 6

    Click the Local Printer option. Un-check the "Automatically detect and install" option. Click the "Next" button.

  7. Step 7

    Click the "Create a new port" option. Choose "Standard TCP/IP Port" from the drop down list. Click the Next button. This will launch the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard.

  8. Step 8

    Click the "Next" button in the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard window.

  9. Step 9

    Type the IP address in the Printer Name or IP Address field. Click the "Next" button.

  10. Step 10

    Click the "Finish" button.

  11. Step 11

    You may see the Install Printer Software window. If so, choose the appropriate manufacturer and printer from the lists. If your manufacturer or printer is not listed click the "Have Disk" button and navigate to the drive where the printer driver is located. Click the "Next" button.

  12. Step 12

    Type a name in the "Printer name:" field to identify this printer. Click the "Yes" option if you want this printer to be your default. Click the "No" option if you want another printer to be your default. Click the "Next" button.

  13. Step 13

    Click the "Yes" option to print a test page. Click the "Next" button.

  14. Step 14

    Click the "Finish" button.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can download the latest driver for your printer from the manufacturers website.
  • If you are in a work environment, be sure to get permission from your technology group to print directly to a network printer before doing so.
