Silly Putty, in a kid's hands, has a habit of becoming very, very messy. When faced with a carpet covered in Silly Putty, it may seem like an impossible mess to clean. In actuality, there are several steps you can take to remove the stain.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A Dull Knife (Metal Spoon will work)
  • WD-20 (Car Lubricant)
  • Liquid Dishwashing Detergent
  • Cotton Balls
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Soft Cloth or Spong

Step1
Use the dull knife or spoon to scrape off any Silly Putty that might still be attached to the carpet.
Step2
Spray the mess with WD-40 and let it sit for a few minutes.
Step3
If there's still more silly putty, repeat Step 1 and scrape more of it away.
Step4
Spray again with WD-40 and use the cotton balls to wipe away the stain.
Step5
If the stain is persistent, wet a cotton ball with the rubbing alcohol and blot the stain, then rinse it.
Step6
Dampen the sponge or cloth with warm water and liquid detergent, and wipe away at any remaining residue.
Step7
If a stain still remains, try repeating some of the former steps.

Tips & Warnings

  • If anything remains after completing steps 1-6, try repeating some of them.
  • If you don't have WD-40 or can't obtain any, skip steps 2-4 and try the rubbing alcohol. The results may not be as good.
