We are lied to thousands of times. Sometimes these lies are harmless; other times, we may suffer from believing lies. If you pay close attention, you can learn to identify signals people unintentionally give when they lie.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Observation skills

Step1
When we lie, we're forcing our brain to turn the lie into truth while remembering that truth is a lie. That slows the ability to think efficiently, leading to space fillers like "um", "uh", and "like, you know".
Step2
Stress can cause people who lie to rub their necks to try to relieve the stress.
Step3
When someone makes a statement that sounds like a question, they may be lying.
Step4
Tissues in our noses can engorge with blood when we lie, causing an itching sensation that makes us want to touch our nose.
Step5
When what we say doesn't agree with our body language, the body language is usually telling the truth, For example, if I say, "Yes, we'll be on time," but I'm shaking my head no, I'll probably be late.

Tips & Warnings

  • If someone you are talking to is rubbing their eyes, it could mean they don't believe you or disagree with what you're saying. Raised eyebrows can mean the same thing.
  • The absence of these signals doesn't mean you're hearing the truth
  • The presence of these signals doesn't prove someone is lying. They are an indicator for you to use to protect yourself.
