How to Make a Planter From a Straw Bale

Old straw bales have their uses. Don't toss them out just because they have a bit of mold on them or have gone mildewed. A great way to recycle old straw bales, is to make decorative planters from them. Simple, "green" and easy to accomplish, you can grow anything in them, and as the plants grow, the bale with break down and make a lovely mulching material at the end of the season.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Beg or borrow an old straw bale.

  2. Step 2

    Place it, short side up on the ground where you'd like the planter to have its home.

  3. Step 3

    Dig out the center of the bale and fill with compost, potting soil or other organic material that will work as a growing medium for the plants.

  4. Step 4

    Plant tomato plants, squash plants or any plant that takes your fancy, in the growing medium and water regularly.
