Things You'll Need:
-
Step 1
Buy some Diatomaceous Earth (otherwise known as DE) from a health food supplier or perhaps from an on-line source. Be sure to get food grade DE.
-
Step 2
Sprinkle pet liberally with the DE.
-
Step 3
Leave the DE on your pet. It won't harm them, even if ingested through licking, etc.
-
Step 4
Once the DE has been on your pet for at least 24 hours, use a flea comb on the spots fleas are the heaviest. Check to see that the fleas are dead. If not, leave the DE on longer.
-
Step 5
Wash your pet. I suggest you wash your pet with Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo as this also will kill fleas. See my other eHow article I will reference at the bottom of this page.

on 5/12/2008 We put DE all over our patio in the summertime and the fleas never seem to make it into the house any more! Good article. 5 stars.

on 12/6/2007 Wildscribe - yes, cedar only repels. Additionally, cedar oils can be harmful to animals. Plus -- if you use cedar chips that are urinated on, it creates a NASTY fume type effect that I fear could have the potential to even choke puppies so be careful with it's use. Yes, for dog beds... wonderful stuff!

on 12/6/2007 Angel, nope! Won't hurt them (the food grade type only) in fact, I used to raise rare softbills and parrots and would not only sprinkle it with my newly hatched youngsters (prevent spiders) but would allow them to eat it as it actually can assist with internal parasites as well. And no, do not use this in place of a wormer! But the food grade DE is quite safe, even for cats who lick everything.
