How to hook up a HD device to get the best quality to your HD TV

Note this tutorial is probably too difficult for people that can't program a television remote, but too simple for those that know what and how to use a line conditioning UPS ;)... Please rate my tutorial if you like it at all, if you don't like it let me know. If enough people do not like it I will remove it. You have a brand new DVD, HDDVD, Blueray or TV box that you want to hook up to your new HD capable TV, but don't know how to do it... :)

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • HD device i.e. Blueray
  • HDMI DVI VGA Component cables - one of the above and listed in order of features and performance (see article)
Step1
If you have a DVD player chances are you will want to go with component cables (note not a composite cable.) Arguably the best cable to use is HDMI, however if you know what you are doing you can get equivalent quality out of a few other cable types, if your device has support for HDMI you will likely see a logo on both the device and the television. If you have support for this cable purchase this one. HDMI offers sound and HD video in one small cable. If you do not have support for HDMI, consider DVI or VGA. If you device doesn't seem to support these, you almost always have support for component which still has an excellent signal and sometimes even support for 1080p.
Step2
After you purchase your cable plug one end into your digital box. (DVD-Blueray-Cable-Satellite Box)
Step3
Plug the other end into your television.
Step4
Set your TV's input selection on the remote to the proper setting. If you used Component it will typically say that, if you used VGA it will say RGB or computer, HDMI often is labeled Digital TV or simply HD. Some HDMI boxes require setup before you can attach the HDMI to the television. If you plug a PS3 into a TV with HDMI cables and it does not immediately work it may be the resolution is too high for your TV. Simply connect lower definition cables, set the HDMI resolution lower and then reconnect to the TV.
Step5
If necessary hook take the audio line out (fiber or composite) and insert into your sound system.

Keep in mind systems vary so much that it is impossible to tell you which exact port in this very general tutorial.

Tips & Warnings

  • In general anything that goes to a TV will go in TV inputs not outputs with the exception of sound. Sound can be either, if going to a sound system it will be an output from the TV to an input on the sound system. (most of the time)
  • Purchase your cables online you will save a bundle.
  • Don't buy cables longer then you need, it can degrade your signal.
  • Component cables are typically the cheapest cable that provide a decent signal.
  • Avoid using Composite, Coaxial, and RF cables\technologies, they often produce the lowest resolutions and lowest color depths. While Coaxial cable can produce high resolution images, using it as an interconnect between non-tv devices often produce a bad picture.
  • Don't bother with 1080p on sets less the 37" it isn't worth your money as most people can't see the difference between 720P and 1080P on smaller sets.
