Some people who have been diagnosed with chronic illnesses are able to continue their careers, even if they alter their schedules or circumstances to some extent. Other people are not able to keep working due to their disease. Most people agree that finding an outlet to keep their connections and activities going is important in dealing with a chronic disease. This keeps them from becoming overly bored, and keeps them accomplishing new things. Here are some ways you can replace the daily grind of your previous job with a new interest.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Learn a language. If you have ever thought about speaking a different language, give it a try. Books and CDs are available to walk you through the lessons. Consider sign language, too.

  2. Step 2

Find out about your family history. Scour the Internet or library books for more information on your ancestors.

  3. Step 3

Take up scrapbooking. Just about everyone has boxes of photos around the house. Put them together for you, your family and your friends. You can involve your family and friends in this activity, too, going together to scrapbook parties.

  4. Step 4

Sketch or paint. Many people have hidden talents that they would have otherwise not discovered.

  5. Step 5

Watch the birds, butterflies or whatever other animals you might like. There is so much to learn about these creatures through field guides and research books. Take photos or video of the animals to do further research or just to keep track of them.

  6. Step 6

Consider volunteering. There are different ways people can volunteer their time and talents. Look into the needs of local libraries, schools, community groups and more.

  7. Step 7

Keep a journal. Write down memories, current events and more.

  8. Step 8

Pick a craft. Many people learn to knit, make wreaths or practice origami. The options are endless, and local craft stores typically have instruction guides and classes.
