Even when Jesus fed the 5000 with 5 loaves and 2 fish. HE POINTED OUT THAT THERE WERE 12 BASKETS LEFT AND THAT THEY SHOULD NOT BE WASTED. (John 6: 9-16.) If we really think about it . . . WE PROBABLY ALL WASTE TOO MUCH FOOD. Next time you go out to eat notice how much food people leave behind on their plates. To get to the point . . . I believe that we all can stop wasting food if we just try to follow the following steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A desire to stop wasting food.
  • A simple plan to accomplish this.
  1. Step 1

IF ITS EATING OUT OR BUYING FOOD TO EAT AT HOME. STEP ONE IS TO BUY SMALLER AMOUNTS. Why buy two heads of lettuce just because it's on sale, If I end up throwing one head of lettuce out. (what did I save?)
DON'T COOK FOR FOUR IF ONLY TWO OF YOU ARE EATING.

  2. Step 2

BUY MORE OFTEN. If I only use a quart of milk a week, then I should just buy a quart at a time. WHY SHOULD I BUY THREE QUARTS AND HAVE A QUART GO SOUR? ( I don't save this way.) Food left over? FREEZE IT FOR LATTER IF YOU MUST.

  3. Step 3
SMALLER PLATES ARE A GOOD IDEA TO HELP YOU EAT LESS.
SMALLER PLATES ARE A GOOD IDEA TO HELP YOU EAT LESS.

PUT SMALLER AMOUNTS OF FOOD ON MY PLATE. If I'm still hungry after I've finished what's on my plate I can always go back and get more. The same should be practised when feeding children. If I paid for 12 ounces of corn flakes and only got 11 ounces I wouldn't be too happy. WHATS THE DIFFERENCE IF I THROW OUT THAT OUNCE AFTER I BOUGHT IT.( To say nothing of the milk I just wasted.) MOST PEOPLE DON'T LIKE LEFT OVER SOGGY CORN FLAKES.

  4. Step 4

DON'T KEEP A LOT OF FOOD IN YOUR FRIDGE. ( just what you need.) AND ROTATE YOUR PURCHASES IN ORDER TO EAT THE OLDEST STOCK FIRST. ( Eat what you bought two days ago before you eat what you bought yesterday.) THE IDEA IS TO CUT DOWN ON OUR LEFTOVERS. ( They don't usually taste that great anyhow.) DOES FOOD GO BAD IN YOUR FRIDGE?
If I had all the money spent on the food that went bad in our fridges. Would I be rich?

Tips & Warnings
  • BUY LESS AND SAVE MONEY
  • BUY MORE OFTEN AND KEEP FOOD FRESHER
  • ROTATE THE FOOD IN YOUR FRIDGE
  • PUT LESS ON YOUR PLATE. ( If your still hungry you can always get more.)
  • DON'T OVERLOAD YOUR FRIDGE
  • SAVE WHAT MIGHT GET LOST BY PUTTING IT INTO YOUR FREEZER FOR ANOTHER DAY.
  • HAVING FOOD IN YOUR LARGE FREEZER IS OK.
  • THE IDEA IS TO PREVENT WASTE.
  • YOU MIGHT GAIN WEIGHT IF YOU EAT TOO MUCH

on 7/31/2008 We freeze bananas when they get brown skinned. they are very sweet and creamy and make great smoothies. Also, you can freeze something in a container, take it out and put it in a baggie so you never run out of containers, lol. Pour the last of the juice into an ice cube tray instead of down the drain. Freeze tomatoes whole in a bag after dipping them in boiling water. Throw them into the blender with some fresh cilantro, a jalpeno or chipotle pepper or two and a quartered onion for instant salsa.

on 5/30/2008 "If I wind up throwing one head of lettuce out, what I saved?" We've been working on saving food and not wasting it. This is surely a worthy topic.

on 4/12/2008 I totally agree with your article. As adults its best to be a example for our children and enforce good family habits. My grandpa always use to tell me waste not, want not. My grandparents grew up in a very different time from today, in a poor area. They always prompted up not to put anything on our plates unless we intended to eat it. My grandma was the queen of refreshing left overs and taught us even if we can afford to buy allot but if we don't absolutely need it why by it. Great Article. 5 stars.
