Clematis is a wonderful vine because it includes many different varieties that can grow in many conditions and flourish with beautiful flowers, but doesn’t take up a large amount of room in the garden.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clematis plant
  • Shovel
  • Organic material such as compost or peat moss
  • Bonemeal
  1. Step 1

Choose a site for clematis. Remember to give it something sturdy to climb up. Many types of clematis will cling to a tree, fence or wall without being tied. Others may need a lattice or other structure to climb on.

  2. Step 2

Purchase clematis from a local nursery or online. You may find a better variety online, but you can always get personal assistance and check the health of a plant at a local nursery.

  3. Step 3

If you start with a very small plant, it will need more protection, so you may wish to temporarily plant it in a more shaded area or in a pot.

  4. Step 4

When the clematis is ready to go into its final site, dig a hole and mix the soil from the hole with organic material.

  5. Step 5

Place the clematis in the hole with the crown of the plant about two inches below the soil line.

  6. Step 6

Put a few tablespoons of bonemeal into the hole to encourage strong root growth. Fill in the hole.

  7. Step 7

Water deeply and remember to continue watering frequently for the first few months until the plant is established.

  8. Step 8

Place a large rock or another plant directly in front of the clematis to keep the roots cool. Though most clematis prefer full or part sun, they don’t like warm roots.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some of the most popular forms of clematis, such as the purple jackmanii, are often sold at grocery or chain stores.
  • Don’t worry if your clematis doesn’t grow much in the first year. Clematis usually come into their own in their third season.
  • One of the great things about clematis is that they combine well with other plants and can create a beautiful backdrop for a flower bed.
