Yoga is a great way to stay in shape and improve strength, flexibility and balance. The different styles, descriptions and strange positions can be intimidating for a beginner, but yoga can be a fun, easy way for even beginners to start exercising.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nonskid yoga mat
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Yoga class or video
  1. Step 1

Get the correct supplies. All you really need to start is a yoga mat, which will let you perform the positions without slipping. Other supplies that might help are yoga blocks, a yoga strap and folded blankets. These items might help you perform some of the positions.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether you want to work out alone or with a group.

  3. Step 3

If you don’t mind being in a crowd, a beginner’s yoga class can be a great, motivating way to get started. Call around to local gyms, but also keep in mind that many colleges offer yoga classes for students. Some places will let you take a introductory session without signing up for a full class schedule.

  4. Step 4

If you prefer not to try yoga in a group setting, buy or rent a DVD with several yoga sessions and instruction specifically for beginners. There are many different kinds of yoga DVDs available, from more traditional methods to a more fast-paced version created by MTV.

  5. Step 5

Prepare for your first yoga session by dressing in comfortable clothes. It’s best not to have loose clothing that might tangle during the positions.

  6. Step 6

Remember that yoga is supposed to be fun and relaxing.

Tips & Warnings
  • The great thing about yoga is that you can make it as easy or difficult as you’d like by altering the positions.
  • Don’t worry if you can’t do all of the positions right away or if you don’t remember what they are.
  • Don’t push yourself too hard, especially if you are new to exercising.
