Things You'll Need:
- Paper and pencil
- Mirror
- An objective look through your closet
- A trustworthy friend
- Your sense of humor

Step 1
Write down what the performance is, where it will take place, time of the event. This is a critical step and the details are important. Performing at a New Year's Eve gala requires a completely different presentation than performing for an after-school children's gathering. Think "appropriate."
-
Step 2
Once you are clear about the what, where and when, take a clear look in the mirror. Are you tall? Short? Skinny? Plump? There are standard guides for dressing according to your body type. But that's not really what I'm talking about. The point is, you want an audience to focus on you and what you're doing, not on your attire.

Step 3
Take a look in your closet. That orange spandex cat suit that you wore last Halloween won't do for your first cabaret act. In fact, it probably won't ever do if you want to be asked back. Look for basics. A solid color, good-fitting dress or suit is always a great choice. You can't go wrong with basic black for the evening or a brown dress or suit for the afternoon. Use accessories and makeup if you feel too blah, but easy does it on both. A little bit of glamour goes a long way. We're aiming for class, sophistication and professionalism. Also, remember that it is critically important that you be comfortable. So wear the proper undergarments. If your dress is low cut and you're uncomfortable, you're going to be focused on that instead of delivering a brilliant reading of a lyric.

Step 4
Invite a trusted friend to see you in your performance outfit. If they're really a trusted friend, listen to them. If they tell you to lose the five-inch spikes, then do it. If they suggest your shoes need a polishing, please listen. If they can see your panty line, find a good slip.
