Who wouldn't want to leave their boring 9-to-5 job for a life of blogging for bucks all day? If they could, many people would take the home writing gig over the office headache in a second. Yet blogging jobs that pay well are hard to come by, especially if you're not a big name or have little or no experience. The social networking website Newsvine doesn't promise to pay oodles of cash. However, the site does pay active members something every month out of the advertising revenue that is earned. The affiliate program compensates members with 90 percent of ad revenue for their own domain, as well as 10 percent of ad revenue for the domains of any people they refer to the site. While you almost definitely will not make enough to pay more than one or two of your bills, if you're lucky, you might get at least a cup of Joe on the house, courtesy of Newsvine.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Decide if you want to seed an article found on another website or write an original article of your own. The money you can make on either seems to be about equal since earning revenue depends most on how well-read an item is.
Step2
Post your content at an optimal time, such as Monday through Thursday during business hours. Weekends are notoriously slow traffic periods, as are late-night hours.
Step3
Vote for your own content once it goes live. This practice is not penalized, and if you felt the material was good enough to post, then it deserves your vote, too.
Step4
Respond to commenters in a timely fashion, making sure to keep your own contributions to the discussion respectful and on-topic. The more comments an article has, the more active it is deemed, and the more prominent it becomes in its section or on the front page. But, many seasoned Newsviners look down on the practice of making frivolous comments just to prolong the life of an article, particularly your own, so proceed with caution to avoid acquiring a poor reputation.
Step5
Comment on the posts that other Newsvine members publish, especially those that relate to the subjects you write about and seed most. Just as on any blog, reciprocating comments plays a large role in spreading the word about newsworthy content. Newsvine even has an interface called the Conversation Tracker that allows members who are friends to follow the comments their friends make on posts around the site. It's a unique and excellent way to find new material of interest.
Step6
Visit the Feeds section of your column to get the code that will allow you to include links to your posts on your personal blog or website elsewhere. The links can help generate the traffic needed to increase your monthly portion of the advertising revenue.

Tips & Warnings

  • More than a few individuals attempt to quickly boost their earnings by posting inflammatory and downright offensive content capable of spiking traffic with a flurry of curious readers. Such an approach should be avoided, however, because Newsviners are particularly vigilant, and they don't hesitate to point out offenders. The site has a reporting system that makes doing so very simple and anonymous, if one wishes to keep his or her identity private.
