Draw a star on a piece of paper. Use a ruler to draw a straight star and make sure that the lines you draw each measure 6 inches long. Take some of the twigs and place them on top of your drawing. Using your hot glue gun, hot glue the sticks together following the pattern on the paper. Allow the hot glue to dry.

Use the rest of the twig pieces to fill out your twig star. Hot glue the sticks in various places on the star shape to create a rustic look for your tree topper. Set the star aside and allow the glue to dry. Take the cardboard toilet paper holder and make the tube shorter by horizontally cutting it in half. Hot glue your dried twig star to the top front portion of the cut toilet paper holder. Allow the twig star to dry once more.

Go outside to a well-ventilated area and spread newspaper out on the ground. Place your twig star on the newspaper. Spray the gold spray paint thoroughly on the twig star. Let the spray paint dry for at least 5 minutes. Turn the star over and repeat the process on the other side, then allow another 5 minutes for the second side to dry. Repeat this process to apply a second coat of spray paint to each side of your star. Leave the star outside for at least half a day to finish drying, and then place your new star on top of your tree.
