How to Understand Gossip Girl

Step 1

This is Serena van der Woodsen. Serena is the main character. She use to party hard at her fancy private school, until she took herself away to an upstate boarding school for a year. The first episode of the season started with her returning to NY.
Step 2

This is Blair Waldorf. Blair and Serena have been best friends for a long time, though it is a rocky relationship. Blair's father recently left her mother and moved in with his gay lover in Paris. Also, Blair use to be bulimic.
Step 3

This is Nate Archibald. Blair and Nate dated since they were five due to much pressure from their parents. But Nate slept with Serena before Serena left to boarding school. Blair was not happy. She and Nate have been rocky ever since and he recently broke up with her, because he's still in love with Serena. His dad was arrested for embezzlement and is also a cocaine addict and tried to kill himself.
Step 4

This is Dan Humphrey. Dan lives in Brooklyn (oh the shame) and is an outcast at the fancy school. Dan use to love Serena from afar, but now they are dating and making out all over the place.
Step 5

This is Jenny, Dan's younger sister. She really wants to be liked by Blair and be part of the popular crowd. She's friends with Eric (below) but also shared a "special moment" with Nate after he and Blair broke up. And after Chuck (below) embarrased her, she locked him on the roof without any clothes.
Step 6

This is Dan and Jenny's dad. He is super hip. He and Serena's mom (below) use to be an item, back when she was slumming it as a band groupie. However, now he's trying to reconcile with his wife and is keeping Serena's mom out of the picture to avoid complications.
Step 7

This is Serena's mom. She lives with Serena in a fancy hotel. Recently she was divorced from her husband and she is now secretly seeing Chuck's (below) father. Also, she had Eric (Serena's younger brother, not pictured) institutionalized after he tried to kill himself. This is why Serena came home.
Step 8

This is Chuck Bass. He is a dark, rich, misunderstood party boy. He's Nate's best friend, but recently realized he's in love with Blair. He and Blair slept together twice. He wants it to be something more.
Step 9

All this is narrated by the unseen Gossip Girl who delivers gossip by text message, bulletin and pictures. No one knows who she is, except that she is voiced by Veronica Mars.
Step 10

Now that you have all the background, try to keep up nd have fun.
