Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Focus on style, not function.
It might sound odd, but if you’re going for that “wow” factor, you have to concentrate on looks. You don’t really need a copper water fountain, stone-covered grill or solar-powered chandelier. But they’re stylish and if done right, can transform your yard into a classical paradise.
Step2
Pay attention to alternative table tops and indoor/outdoor accessories.
They’re the kind of choices that have made custom exterior design a very big business and they can turn an average backyard into something extravagant. When shopping for major purchases like tables and chairs, look for something other than glass. Stone tables and resin-coated sets are some popular alternative choices.
Step3
Think wicker.
Sofa lounges and day beds aren’t just for the indoors. Wicker is a nice material for outdoor use, especially if it’s painted white and decorated with colorful cushions. Add a hammock to complete the lounge-like atmosphere.
Step4
Try a rug.
Bamboo rugs are one of the latest indoor pieces to make the jump to the patio. They work well in screen rooms for an elongated period of time and can be displayed outdoors too. Just be sure to take them in before rain comes.
Step5
Take chances
If you have simpler tastes inside of your home, the backyard is your chance to let loose. It’s easy to experiment on a space that is only used a few months out of the year. If it doesn’t work, it’s not that traumatic since patio furniture tends to be more disposable and inexpensive than other decorative items used throughout your home. Add throw pillows, rocking chairs, even chaise lounges – just be sure that your outdoor dining area doesn’t rival what you have indoors.
