Things You'll Need:
- 8 jor 9 weight fly rod with 8 or 9 weight clear intermediate fly line and a ten foot 7x leader with a chatruese streamer as your fly
-
Step 1
Early spring, late summer and fall are best times for striper fishing.
Find a coastal area that is known for attracting striped bass. The Long Island Sound, the CT shoreline and the New England Coast are all very productive areas. -
Step 2
It would be best to have a small open (center console) skiff or you can charter striper boats and guides in just about any coastal community from NYC to Maine. If on a boat, your or the guide will do better at nights on a full moon. If fishing in daytime, look for circling birds on the horizon and below that fish breaking the water as they feed on schooling baitfish
-
Step 3
Once upon the school of feeding fish. Quickly strip line out of and fling your fly into the crashing bass. Strip quickly and don't let the line gather slack in the water. The bass will hit the streamer hard and immediately tug on it. Set the hook and pull the fly line or let the fly line settle on the reel and then reel the fish in.
-
Step 4
Once the fish is boatside "lip" it quickly with a gaff or your hand. The best salt water fly fishermen adhere to "catch and release" and no bass under 21" in length should be kept at all.
