Opening a bottle of Champagne or other sparkling wine sealed with a wire cage and cork can be daunting, and dangerous. However, if you take a few precautions, and follow these steps, it can be acomplished quickly and safely.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Good clean kitchen towel.
  1. Step 1

Chill the bottle to around 40°F/16°C. Please notice that the traditional ice bucket allows an ice/water mixture to reach the neck of the standard bottle, but leaves the neck out above. This prevents the cork from getting cold, which will make it more difficult to remove. (If you have chilled the bottle in a refrigerator and are having difficulty getting the cork out,
run warm (not hot!) water over the bottle neck containing the cork for a few seconds.)

  2. Step 2

Remove the decorative foil from around the cork and wire cage

  3. Step 3

Place a clean kitchen towel over the cork and cage, and drape the towel over the rest of the bottle

  4. Step 4

Grip the bottle with the towel between the glass and your skin

  5. Step 5

Keeping a good grip on the bottle neck,
turn the wire loop three or more times counter clockwise to loosen the cage. Please note that leaving the wire cage on the cork helps to grip the cork

  6. Step 6

Now that the cage is loose, grip the towel over the cork with the free hand, and turn - some will turn the bottle, some will turn the cork, some will turn both, but as long as you get the cork turning, and keep the towel and bottle secure in your hands, everything is fine. Also remember to aim the cork away from anything you do not wish to be hit with a flying cork, should you loose control.

  7. Step 7

As the cork turns in the bottle, the seal will break and the cork will begin to slip. You will feel this change.

  8. Step 8

Keeping a grip on the bottle and the cork, ease the cork free with the aid of the gas pressure of the wine, and you will be rewarded with a sigh of the gas escaping as the cork is released

  9. Step 9

Now you can pull the cork and wire cage free and emjoy the wine.
