Flyfishing for trout is fun and easy. Just follow these steps:

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A stream, lake or pond
  • Fly rod, floating line, leader, tippet and a good selection of flies
  • Waders and wade stick

    How to Flyfish for Trout

  1. Step 1

Locate local fly fishing friendly streams at www.tma.org
A good fly rod to use is 5 or 6 weight with the same weight forward fly line. Use a 4x or 5x Tippet. Pick up a good selection of midges, mayflies, olives and a royal coachman. Your local flyshop can help you with this

  2. Step 2

Find a stream in early spring or late fall. Trout usually like water temperatures of less than 6O degrees, but can be found in higher water temps as well.

Find a nice passive stream with not too much current.

  3. Step 3

Wade in to ankle or knee high water only to start.
Strip line out of your reel and let it float down river.

Start a nice cadence of casting. Back cast first, then forward cast. Try to keep cast paralell to the water. Land your fly ten feet forward of your position and let it float preferably with the fly line on floating on top of the water and slightly behind the fly and leader.
Aim your fly towards rock outcroppings, or low hanging trees. Trout tend to accumulate in those places.

  4. Step 4

When the trout takes it, pull the rod tip up gently with your right hand and pull the fly line in your right hand taught. It doensn't take much to hook a trout so be gentle as you are a "catch and release" person if you are to be a true fly fisherman. If the trout is large, let him spool, but cup your hand underneath the reel and add pressure to slow and tire the fish. As quickly as you can reel the fish up. While keeping the fish in the water, flip it over on it's pack and with forceps, slowly pull the hook out of the trouts jaw, then turn the fish over again and let him go. YOu can take time to take a picture, but make sure you do it expeditiously and in a way that does not harm the fish.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read up on Fly fishing on the web, local library and bookstore before going out.
  • It is better to fish with a buddy; especially in "big" water.
