It can be hard to keep up with a horse's mane, especially when it is long and the horse lives outside. With a few simple tricks, detangling your horse's tresses can be done in minutes.

From Quick Guide: Horse Grooming Guide
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair conditioner, Baby oil, mane comb or hair brush, mane detangler (optional)
  1. Step 1

Place your horse in a bath stall or bathing area.

  2. Step 2

    Give your horse a bath.

  3. Step 3

After washing your horse's mane, then add conditioner to their mane by running your fingers through the hair and working in as much product as possible.

  4. Step 4

Let the conditioner set in the horse's hair for three to five minutes.

  5. Step 5

Rinse the conditioner out with water. If you do not have baby oil, repeat the conditioner step again. If you have baby oil put a quarter size amount in your hand and work it through the worse tangled areas of the horse's locks. Use the oil sparingly.

  6. Step 6

Try to comb or brush through the conditioned mane, using your fingers when necessary to work out knots. If the hair is really matted try to use more oil. Eventually the knots and mats will come out, and the mane will be detangled. Another washing may be necessary if a lot of oil is used.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the knots and mats are really tight and almost impossible to deal with do not be afraid to use scissors to gently cut these clumps of hair loose. Try not to cut to much, and to use the scissors and comb together to loosen tough areas.
