How to Develop a Writing Style

Style is more than something that walks down a runway. Writers must have style in their work so that it doesn’t bore everyone to tears and offers a clear understanding of a particular concept. Whether it’s informal, funny or straightforward, everyone who writes has a writing style.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Be consistent. Writing styles often emulate the writer’s personality. If the writer is a funny person, it’s easy for the writer to translate a funny style into their writing. Writing styles must also be appropriate to what is being written. This means, if possible, adapt a funny writing style appropriately to whatever is being written.
Step2
Link thoughts logically. Unless the style is clearly something that jumps from one topic to the next with no transition, writers must provide logical transitions in their work. The way that thoughts are linked to one another may be clever, but make sure that they are well defined.
Step3
Clarify all thoughts. It is not necessary to use big words to communicate ideas unless you have a naturally big brain that uses big words. Clarity means that thoughts are delivered in a concise manner that engages the reader.
Step4
Read all time. Great writers are great readers. Many writers make the mistake of existing in a vacuum and never read anyone else’s work. Writers should have a an understanding of the concepts that other writers are address and the way that they are addressing them. Writers should read books, magazines, newsletters, the Internet or anything else that communicates a point of view.
