How to Wash a Horse Blanket

Horse blankets are always getting dirty and getting torn by being worn outside in the mud and the muck. Most people will not repair horse blankets without them being washed properly and most horse owners like to keep their horse blankets somewhat clean for our animals.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Front load washer
  • Horse blanket Detergent

Step1
Find a place where you can lay out the horse blanket.
Step2
Roll the straps that are attached around themselves all the way up to where they are attached to the blanket. Then duct tape the roll you just made so it cannot come undone.
Step3
Detach any leg straps or other removable part of the blanket and prepare to wash them seperately.
Step4
Find a large washer, preferably a front loading machine or one without an agitator.
Step5
Place one blanket per load in the washing machine unless it is a cooler or anti-sweat sheet made from a lighter material. Then two to three items in the machine should be fine.
Step6
Wash turnout blankets on heavy duty or normal cycle in hot water. Coolers and sheets made from cotton should be washed on the normal cycle in cold water.
Step7
Add the amount of detergent you think is necessary.
Step8
Dry by hanging or using a heavy duty dryer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your blanket is really dirty, before using a washing machine, wash the blanket in a wash stall area. Using hot water, ivory soap and a scrub brush on grimy areas ahead of time can really make a difference.
  • Be sure to ask laundromats if it is okay to wash your horse blankets in their machines. Sometimes it is not allowed or they have special machines for horse laundry.
