Homeschooling provides parents the opportunity to tailor curriculum to children's particular learning styles, as well as their interests and skill levels. Most purchased curriculum tell you what and how to teach particular lessons. You may find, however, that a particular homeschool curriculum does not quite match what is best for your child. Supplement curriculum you already have or develop your own to tailor it to your child's interests and abilities. Plenty of resources will allow you to do this for free.

Determine your child's interest and natural inclinations. Keep tabs on his favorite books, TV shows, and magazines. Ask him what topics interest him.

    • 2

Check out a virtual online library, such as what your local branch offers or Wowio.com, which offers many eBooks on lots of subjects. Wowio has a section of free eBooks. Download an eBook that you want for a lesson. Print a copy to place in the binder.

Add educational and fun activities that pertain to a lesson. Visit sources Enchanted Learning and ABC Teach, which offer activities including worksheets, crafts and quizzes on topics from weather and geography to art and writing. The websites are free, but to get the most out of them, you may want to pay the annual membership fee. Print out activities, and place them in the binder according to lesson topics.

Add a weekly arts and crafts lesson, depending on your child's age. Visit a site such as Kaboose for project ideas. Some kids learn better with hands-on crafts.

Add math lessons to the weekly curriculum. Turn Bingo and flash cards into equations, formulas, and numbers as fitting for your child's age.

Tips & Warnings

  • Start by designing one subject on your own, and work your way up to creating an entire curriculum.

  • Don't go overboard with lesson planning. It is easy to get carried away when you see all that educational sources have to offer.

  • Check your state's guidelines about home schooling curriculum when developing your own; you must meet the requirements of the law.
