How to Grind on a Skateboard

How to Grind on a Skateboardthumbnail
Learn to grind on your skateboard to slide along obstacles.

The grind is a skateboarding move in which skaters slide along obstacles on their trucks, or the metal part between the wheels. Practice grinding in low areas, such as curbs or low ledges, to reduce the risk of injury in case of a fall. Once you master the smaller obstacles, you can move on to larger, more ambitious objectives, such as park benches and railings. The easiest type of grind is the 50-50, in which the trucks are positioned evenly on the obstacle.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • 6-inch high ledge or curb
    • Skateboard
      • 1

Approach the ledge so that you can skate directly toward its straight edge. Skate toward it.

      • 2

Position your feet in the ollie position so that the ball of your back foot is in the center of the tail and your front foot is on top of or behind the front trucks.

      • 3

Bend your knees low as you approach the ledge. Ollie up onto the object, landing so that the ledge is positioned in the center of the trucks. Push both feet down to feel the trucks lock onto the object and make sure that both trucks are even on the ledge. Keep your feet in the ollie position. Keep your weight balanced with your shoulders above your skateboard and your knees bent. Hold your arms out for balance, if necessary.

      • 4

Ollie off the end of the obstacle, aiming to have all four wheels land on the ground at the same time.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Stay relaxed and do not fear falling. If you are tense, you are more likely to fall.

    • Always wear safety gear -- helmet, elbow and knee pads -- when learning how to grind.
