There are two things that make every person in this world look great, a stylish pair of shoes and a terrific haircut. While you can spend an afternoon shopping for the perfect pair of shoes a haircut can be harder since you aren't shopping for the cut but for the person who is going to give it to you. A great hairdresser is your friend, your therapist and your stylist. If you find yourself looking for a hairdresser take your time with your search, you don't want to trust your lovely locks to just anybody.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a recommendation. Talk to your friends whose style you admire and don't be afraid to stop people on the street with fantastic hair to ask them where they get it cut. People always appreciate a compliment and you could discover a salon and stylist that you never knew existed.

  2. Step 2

Visit the salons in your community. Does one of them have an ambience that you relate to? If you find a salon that intrigues you, go on a busy day when most of the stylists are working and check them out; if one of them looks like someone who you would want to hang out with, spend a few minutes watching them work. If you like their technique (are they friendly? Is their cutting precise?) find out their name. Ask the person at the front desk if they can recommend a stylist if the cutting floor can't be seen from the salon reception area.

  3. Step 3

Schedule consultation appointments with the stylists that you are interested in. Some salons will invite you to come by during a slow period to talk to your potential stylist for free, while others will book you in for a consultation that you will have to pay for. Just like you wouldn't trust a surgeon to operate on you without meeting them first, you don't want your hair to be cut by someone you haven't at least talked to beforehand.

  4. Step 4

Go to your consultation with a short list of prepared questions and an idea of what you would like your next haircut to look like. Ask the stylist that you are meeting with to offer you some suggestions. Do you find them friendly? Are they happy and gracious about meeting you? Are they interested in suggesting ideas for your look? You should be able to tell pretty quickly if this particular hairdresser is interested in taking you on as a client or if they fit your criteria for a stylist.

  5. Step 5

Book your cut with the hairstylist that you liked the best; after your careful interview process hopefully you will have found the person that you will want to maintain a long and happy relationship with. Remember too that that relationship goes both ways, you have expectations of your hairdresser and they have expectations for what a good client should be: friendly, loyal, and a good tipper!
