Discus choices are as varied as discus throwers. Choosing just the right discus is about more than size, it is about rim weight, discus weight and manufacturing material.

From Quick Guide: Track & Field Equipment Guide
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know your weight. Depending upon your sex and age, the overall weight of the discus will change. While women always throw a 1K discus, men have a plethora of choices. Ages 14 and under will throw a 1K discus, ages 15-18 throw a 1.6K discus and college aged men will throw a 2K discus.

  2. Step 2

Choose the right material. Discus' are manufactured in either rubber, wood or composite plastic. Rubber discus' are usually reserved for beginners and for practice. The wooden discus is the next level and the composite discus encompasses the most advanced level.

  3. Step 3

The heavier the rim, the more experienced the thrower. The weight of the overall discus is not the only weight concerning a discus thrower. The rim weight affects the overall spin of the discus. The more advanced the thrower, the more overall weight that should be transferred to the rim.

Tips & Warnings
  • Rubber discus' are the best for beginning throwers.
  • Money does not buy a better discus.
  • The more expensive a discus, the higher the rim weight.
