Making sack lunches can save you a great deal of money. School lunches are increasing in price, and going out to eat during work can add up fast. Making lunches your family will enjoy takes some planning and work, but it is possible. The key is to be organized.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of food your family loves. This list will assist you in creating a menu so you can be prepared. The menu needs to include an entree, one or more side dishes, a drink, and a dessert if you like.

  2. Step 2

You entree will take most of the time. You can simply use leftovers from the previous night, or cook an entire new meal. Lasagna, burritos, salads, casseroles, pastas, chicken, and soups are all great options.

  3. Step 3

After you have chosen the entree, plan your side dishes. Fresh or canned fruit, side salads, and vegetables are excellent choices. Choose more than one for a more balanced meal.

  4. Step 4

If you decide to include a dessert, pies, cookies, and yogurts are delicious.

  5. Step 5

Have your menu planned before you do your regular grocery shopping. Check your menu each day for the next day. Prepare as much as possible the night before to keep your morning moving smoothly. If a meal does not go well, simply cross it off your list and look for a replacement.

  6. Step 6

Meals can be kept unique by mixing side dishes around. This will keep everyone's taste buds happy.

on 12/5/2007 Thank you for the comment. I actually have another article up that talks about how to keep the food at an appropriate temperature. I have been using these methods for over a year and have never been disappointed. You can read the other article here:

on 12/5/2007 These are good suggestions, however, most of my school children do not have access to refrigeration or microwave ovens. Consequently, they have to bring things in their sack lunch that won't go bad and can be eaten at room temperature.
