Teaching toddler twins to sign is just like teaching another language.
Teaching toddler twins to sign is just like teaching another language.

Sign language is not simply a game, but another language. Teaching sign language to twins is a fun and useful way to communicate when audible commands are not able to be heard. Twins learn easily as a group and practice the signs with each other on a daily basis.

From Quick Guide: Learn to Use Sign Language
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Introducing the idea. Toddler are the perfect age group for beginning a new language. Twins, learn quickly and practice what they learn with each other. Introduce sign language to your toddlers before beginning lessons through visual means, such as, cartoons and movies.

  2. Step 2

Relate the signs. To begin teaching sign language to your toddler twins, relate normal every day items to specific hand gestures. The hand gestures do not have to be those of "official" sign language. Use whatever signs are easy for you and your toddler twins to remember.

  3. Step 3

Repeat the signs. Repetition is the key to teaching sign language to toddler twins. Every time you come in contact with one of the taught signs, be sure to repeat the name of the item and the sign.

  4. Step 4

Practice together and apart. Practice makes perfect, the old adage says. Practicing the signs with your toddler twins can occur both in your presence and out of your presence. Eventually your toddler twins will speak to each other not in yells, but in signs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient. While toddlers learn quickly, they lose attention just as quickly.
  • Do not introduce more than one new sign every two to three days.
