Hormone replacement therapy is the only cure for a menopause migraine.

Menopause migraines are an extremely painful symptom of menopause. For women young and old, the lack of the hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone may cause severe migraines. While the migraines can be treated with pain killers, hormone replacement therapy is the only cure.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

See a gynecologist. If you are experiencing migraines as a result of menopause, a gynecologist may be able to help. The reintroduction of the hormones your body is lacking will solve the missing migraine piece.

  2. Step 2

Obtain a prescription. Hormone replacement therapy is only available by a doctor's prescription. Therapies are available as gels, patches and pills.

  3. Step 3

Take your hormone replacement therapy. After filling your prescription, begin taking the hormone replacement therapy. Depending on which type of therapy you choose, the schedule of dosage will vary. Preventing menopause migraines is dependent upon taking your therapy at the same time with each change or dosage.

  4. Step 4

Be patient. After a short period of time, you body hormone levels will return to normal and the headaches will disappear. Be patient with your body if the migraines do not subside immediately.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you continue to have migraines even after starting hormone replacement therapy, the hormone levels may not be high enough or may be too high.
