Step 1
Find out why he curses. Teens curse for a variety of reasons. Is he using bad language to be cool? Is he doing it to bug you? Or is it because curse words are all he hears at school and at home? Talk to your teen about the reasons behind his cursing. Knowing why he curses can help you address the problem.
-
Step 2
Explain to your teen that bad language isn't appropriate. This is especially true when she speaks around authority figures--teachers, bosses and other adults. Remind her that cursing is disrepectful.
-
Step 3
If you've talked to your teen and he still curses, take action. Apply consequences to his bad language. Take away privileges, such as talking on the phone, watching TV, or using the computer. You can also require him to pay a fine using his allowance or job earnings if the cursing continues.
-
Step 4
Encourage your teen to find alternative words to use instead of curse words. Even made up words will do. Help her get into the habit of using acceptable words instead of unacceptable ones.
-
Step 5
Praise him when he doesn't curse. Teens need incentives to continue making good choices. Show your approval when he chooses not to swear.
