Care for Kids With the Flu
Care for Kids With the Flu

It is a horrible feeling when you child is sick. The flu bug can be hard on children and hard on those that care for them. Keeping your child comfortable and maintaining your own health and sanity is not always easy. Here are a few things to help you along.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soap
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Sprite, ginger ale, and/or pedialyte
  • Children's Tylenol
  • Thermometer
  1. Step 1

Check your child's temperature. If you child has a fever over 100 degrees, give the recommended dosage of Tylenol and a luke warm bath to bring down the temperature. Repeat Tylenol as directed while your child has a fever.

  2. Step 2

Offer a soothing fluid such as Sprite or ginger ale if your child is complaining of an upset stomach. This may help calm the stomach.

  3. Step 3

Give Pedialyte to replenish nutrients if your child vomits. You may also need to sit with your child and try to calm her if she becomes scared or anxious.

  4. Step 4

Have your child lay down and try to sleep. The best thing for both child and parent is for the child to sleep. Do not bundle the child tightly if he has a fever, as this can increase his temperature.

  5. Step 5

Wash your hands with soap and water often while your child is sick. You can also use hand sanitizer. Also have your child wash her hands often.

  6. Step 6

Feed your child bland things until his stomach settles. Toast, broth, applesauce, and flavored gelatin are all great options.

  7. Step 7

Clean all sheets, toys, and furniture well while your child is ill and as the sickness lessens. This will help kill off the flu virus to help prevent others from getting sick or remaining ill. Do a thorough sweep of the house with disinfectant.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep plenty of bags or buckets around your child and encourage him to use them if he needs to vomit and can't make it to the bathroom.
  • If you have other children, have them stay in other rooms and use hand sanitizer often to reduce the risk of spreading the illness to them.
  • Never take a child with the flu out except to the doctor's office.
