Replace old appliances with stainless models. Use a stainless gas range of restaurant quality for an upscale look. Buy a stainless refrigerator and dishwasher, too. Keep in mind that stainless can be used with any wood finishes or paint finishes on cabinets, so it's the most flexible of finishes for your appliances.

Add new lighting and special amenities. Install recessed lighting, new light fixtures, shelving and bold artwork. Use a couple of large framed prints of scenes from your favorite cities, for example. Hang a print of a New Orleans pianist or a San Francisco street car, as possible choices.
