For the beginning artist, it's important to master the craft of sketching before moving on to more intimidating paints, computers, or any other final media.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pencils, pens, or other drawing tools
  1. Step 1

Make sure you're sitting comfortably wherever you choose to sketch. The less you fidget, the more successful your sketch will be.

  2. Step 2

Whether drawing from your imagination or from real life, visualize the final product. Choose the angle from which you'll be drawing and adjust your paper size and shape accordingly.

  3. Step 3

If drawing from real life, make sure your subject is well lit and easy to see.

  4. Step 4

Start drawing from the center of the image to the outside, focusing only on general shapes and lightly drawn lines.

  5. Step 5

As the picture starts to take form, go back and add more details in darker strokes. Repeat as necessary, and don't be afraid to use an eraser.

  6. Step 6

Think of your sketch as an outline for your final piece of art. You may end up tweaking your basic idea, but you should use the sketch as a guide.

Tips & Warnings
  • If sketching in charcoal or pencil, be careful not to smudge or otherwise damage your drawing.
