How to Win at Stratego

Instructions

Step 1

Be familiar with the basic rules of Stratego. Check the Related Articles for eHow's directions on how to play.
Step 2

Be unpredictable. Don't place your game pieces in the same place or attack in the same order every game. Keep your opponent off balance by having multiple tricks up your sleeve that you don't use with any kind of pattern.
Step 3

Mix up your pieces. Don't put all the weak pieces up front and all the strong pieces in the back or you won't be able to stop one strong piece from mowing through your front lines.
Step 4

Spread out your miners and give them a bodyguard or two. If you lose all your miners, it becomes extremely hard to win. Your opponent would have to have the flag unprotected by bombs, or you would have to wipe out every single one of your opponent's movable pieces.
Step 5

Watch for pieces that are being moved away from the action--they are likely vulnerable. Pieces coming from far away to join in the fray are probably very strong. Remember their placements and exploit them.
Step 6

Be aggressive and try to force your opponent to bring out the top pieces to stop the bleeding. Then back off for awhile and remember where those strong pieces are so you can take them out by surprise. You can gain control of the game by having a higher piece left than your opponent has. Then the only things that can stop you are bombs and the spy.
