Poker has been a popular game since the days of the Wild West, and many people consider Texas Hold'em one of the most exciting variants of poker. Become a better player of No-Limit Texas Hold'em by following these steps.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Know the basic rules of Texas Hold'em. See Related Articles for an eHow article describing the rules.

  2. Step 2

Be patient. The more players there are at your table, the more time you will spend watching instead of playing. Many times you will have cards that are not worth playing, so wait until the right time to make your move.

  3. Step 3

Be unpredictable. Bluff, semi-bluff, slowplay and bully, but don't pick one strategy and stick to it. You have to mix it up. Learn more about these four strategies in the Tips section.

Tips & Warnings
  • No Limit Hold'em is often reserved for tournaments only. People often join ring games because they want to play for awhile, and the ability to knock people out with one bet defeats that purpose.
  • Occasionally act like you have better cards than you do. This is bluffing. Especially if it has been a long time since you got a good hand that you were able to play, your opponents will likely believe your bluff.
  • When you are on a flush or straight draw, try acting like you already have a strong hand. This is a semi-bluff.
  • Try playing a strong hand like it is weaker. Just call other bets until someone begins to get aggressive. Then raise them and rake in big chips when you win. This is slowplaying.
  • When you have a lot of chips, get aggressive. You'll be able to steal a lot of pots from weaker players, because a small bet for you will be a big one for them. This is bullying.
  • Ideally, you should never go all-in unless you have the best cards anyone could possibly have for that hand. That is called having the "nuts." Take advantage of reckless or desperate people who go all in when you have the nuts. Of course, if you are running out of chips, you'll have to choose your time to be reckless and desperate yourself.
  • Don't get so wrapped up in your strong hand that you forget to reevaluate the situation after every new card. It might not be so strong anymore.
  • Remember that when you slowplay you are basically letting people stay in the game longer in the hopes they get the second-best hand and you take all their money. Sometimes those new cards will end up leaving you with the second-best hand instead.
